ingredients for green goddess hummus

To make vegan green goddess hummus you’ll need:

  • Canned white beans.  I used cannellini beans, but you could use great northern or another kind of white bean.  I also use low sodium or no added salt beans so that I can better control the saltiness of the final dish.
  • Fresh cilantro.*  You don’t have to remove the leaves from the stems.
  • Fresh parsley.*  Thinner stems are okay for the parsley too. (thin stems ok)
  • Lemon juice.  Fresh is better, but pre-made bottled lemon juice is fine too.
  • Olive oil. The quality of olive oil will elevate the recipe.  Be sure to use extra virgin. It doesn’t need to be gourmet, but extra virgin olive oil is the light taste you want.
  • Green onions.
  • Garlic. Use fresh, frozen, or jarred minced.
  • Tahini.
  • Salt. The amount you use in this recipe will

*note: Be sure to use fresh herbs! Dried herbs will not yield the same desirable results as using fresh.

Can you make oil free green goddess hummus?

Yes, you can make this recipe oil free by using water instead of olive oil.  However, it will definitely change the mouthfeel.

The flavor will still be good, but it won’t be the same kind of creamy.

How to make green hummus (step-by-step)

To begin making your own gluten free green goddess hummus, drain and rinse your canned beans, measuring the amount needed for the recipe.

Finely chop the green onions, including both white and green portions.

Peel and crush the garlic cloves with the flat of a knife.  They do not need to chopped as they will be blended in the food processor.

Now you’re ready to blend!

In a food processor, combine the white beans, garlic, chopped green onions, cilantro, and parsley.

Blend on low until everything is finely chopped and mixed.

Then you add the olive oil, tahini, a pinch of salt, and the lemon juice.

adding tahini to the food processor

Blend on high until smooth and creamy.

At this point, taste your green hummus and add more salt and lemon juice as needed.

Cover and allow to sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving for the flavors to blend properly.

What to dip in green goddess dip?

There are so many delicious things you can dip in this green goddess dip!

Here are some of my favorite ideas:

  • fresh cut veggies (carrots, celery, cucumber, bell pepper strips)
  • potato chips
  • gluten-free pita (I really love this one by BFree Foods)
  • gluten-free pita chips
  • tortilla chips

Beyond some of these more obvious parings, you may want to experiment and try using pickled carrot sticks or other veggies. Find out how to make these yourself in this guide on How To Quick Pickle Fruits & Vegetables.

You also can use this hummus as a topping or side dish to a more filling meal. For example, it would pair beautifully with this Easy Arabic Salad.

FAQs & Troubleshooting

Here are some frequently asked questions & troubleshooting tips you may find helpful for preparing your vegan green goddess hummus:

How long does homemade hummus last?

This will last about 4-6 days in the fridge as long as it is in an airtight container.
Alternatively, you can freeze your hummus, but it may separate when thawing. If this happens, you can always toss it back in your food processor and pulse it to reconstitute it.

What is white bean hummus made of?

Traditional hummus is made with garbanzo beans (also called chickpeas) blended with oil, tahini, and garlic.  However, this gluten free hummus is made using white beans.  You can use cannellini or great northern beans.
Either work with a creamy result!

Is hummus gluten-free?

Traditionally, hummus is naturally gluten free, and this homemade gluten free hummus recipe definitely is!
If purchasing store-bought hummus, be sure to double check the label to be sure no gluten-containing ingredients have been added.

Yum! I love a good hummus for my carrots and veggies. I think a high iron hummus is also important for me given I don't eat a lot of meat.

I don't eat much either, white beans have tons of iron so it's a really great thing to add to your diet!
